IFSA-Butler at the University of Sussex
England
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring, Summer
Dates: TBA
Description:
As is typical of more modern British institutions, the University of Sussex admits students to study a particular subject within a School of Study. The system of higher education in Britain is more specialized than the U.S. liberal arts curriculum. Consequently, study abroad students must have some background in the subjects they wish to study overseas. Because acceptance decisions are made by the departments and Schools of Study, the acceptance process can be lengthy (4-6 weeks), especially if a student is applying to study two subjects found in different Schools. If you wish to split your time between two subjects (you will be expected to do half of your course work in each area), you should list them both as your first choice. Please indicate a second choice department in the event you are not accepted to your first choice. If you wish to do the majority of your study in one department, you will most likely be able to take a few courses outside that area, provided you have the necessary prerequisites and/or receive the approval of the department/school that offers the course. Whereas the majority of British students study one subject within one School of Study, study abroad students are allowed to study subject(s) from more than one school. For example, you may take Animal Psychology in the School of Biological Sciences and Social Psychology in the School of Social Sciences.
Highlights:
Students applying to IFSA-Butler programs in the U.K. will have the opportunity to live and study in some of the most renowned and respected institutions in the world. A serious and dedicated academic environment awaits those who wish to experience these challenging and rewarding programs. The long history of university education in the United Kingdom dates back to the foundation of Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the mid 13th century. Students who attend university in the U.K. have the opportunity to mix with international students from every country on earth who came to the U.K. to experience the same scholastic prestige. The academic year in the United Kingdom runs along roughly the same guidelines as the American academic year. It begins in late September and ends in mid-June. Teaching terms usually consist of three, ten-week periods separated by two four-week breaks, but increasing numbers of universities have switched over to the semester system.
