England
- Yorkshire & the Humber:
Leeds
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: TBA
Description:
Leeds is in a central position in Britain mid-way between London and Edinburgh. It is on the River Aire in the county of West Yorkshire. Because of the woolen textile and engineering industries Leeds grew rapidly in the 19th century. Today it is a financial, commercial and legal center. The city has a population of 5 million and is the social, cultural and sporting center for much of the region. Leeds is a "green city" with many parks and opportunities for outdoor activities. The University of Leeds was founded in 1831 as the Leeds School of Medicine. The university has grown to be the largest university in Britain. Approximately 20,000 students were registered at the University for the 1995/96 academic year. Of these, 2000 were from countries other than the UK and about 4000 were graduate students. The University buildings are grouped together on a single campus near the center of Leeds. It is a ten minute walk across the entire campus and an additional 12 minute walk to reach the city center. Within the campus area are all of the academic departments, the libraries, the administration offices, the University Union and indoor sports facilities. The University of Leeds has 50 departments and offers about 450 different undergraduate degrees and 120 graduate degrees and research degrees through the seven faculties of Arts, Economic and Social Studies, Law, Education, Science, Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry and Health.
