IFSA-Butler at the University of Leeds

  England
  • Yorkshire & the Humber:
  • Leeds

Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: TBA

Description: Leeds is in a central position in Britain mid-way between London and Edinburgh. It is on the River Aire in the county of West Yorkshire. Because of the woolen textile and engineering industries Leeds grew rapidly in the 19th century. Today it is a financial, commercial and legal center. The city has a population of 5 million and is the social, cultural and sporting center for much of the region. Leeds is a "green city" with many parks and opportunities for outdoor activities.

The University of Leeds was founded in 1831 as the Leeds School of Medicine. The university has grown to be the largest university in Britain. Approximately 20,000 students were registered at the University for the 1995/96 academic year. Of these, 2000 were from countries other than the UK and about 4000 were graduate students.

The University buildings are grouped together on a single campus near the center of Leeds. It is a ten minute walk across the entire campus and an additional 12 minute walk to reach the city center. Within the campus area are all of the academic departments, the libraries, the administration offices, the University Union and indoor sports facilities.

The University of Leeds has 50 departments and offers about 450 different undergraduate degrees and 120 graduate degrees and research degrees through the seven faculties of Arts, Economic and Social Studies, Law, Education, Science, Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry and Health.

Highlights: Students applying to IFSA-Butler programs in the U.K. will have the opportunity to live and study in some of the most renowned and respected institutions in the world. A serious and dedicated academic environment awaits those who wish to experience these challenging and rewarding programs.

The long history of university education in the United Kingdom dates back to the foundation of Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the mid 13th century. Students who attend university in the U.K. have the opportunity to mix with international students from every country on earth who came to the U.K. to experience the same scholastic prestige.

The academic year in the United Kingdom runs along roughly the same guidelines as the American academic year. It begins in late September and ends in mid-June. Teaching terms usually consist of three, ten-week periods separated by two four-week breaks, but increasing numbers of universities have switched over to the semester system.
