The University of Essex, located in the city of Colchester, received its Royal Charter in 1965 and quickly earned a reputation for having a friendly, welcoming academic atmosphere. The university offers a lively international community of students from over 100 nations. Essex has a modern campus with numerous facilities for students, including banks, snack bars, a post office, pubs, grocery stores and a student library with long, convenient hours. The university has 17 teaching departments which are organized into five schools of study. Many students take advantage of the university's top-ranked programs in Economics, Sociology, Politics and Law. Especially renowned are the Area Studies Programs focusing on Europe, Latin America, Russia and the United States. Essex students enjoy a lively and varied social life on campus as well. A theater and concert venue provide entertainment ranging from local dramatic presentations to concerts from internationally-known musicians. The city of Colchester, located two miles from the university campus, is a marketplace for the surrounding area and is rapidly expanding as a center for business, industry and technology. At the same time, it maintains a historical reputation complete with Norman castle and the remains of Britain's oldest recorded town. The city's location gives students easy access to London, just 45 minutes southwest, as well as to continental Europe.

The academic year in the United Kingdom runs along roughly the same guidelines as the American academic year. It begins in late September and ends in mid-June. Teaching terms usually consist of three, ten-week periods separated by two four-week breaks, but increasing numbers of universities have switched over to the semester system.
