IFSA-Butler at the City University of London
England
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: TBA
Description:
City University offers classes in a wide range of subjects although the university is most renowned for the following departments: music, aeronautical engineering, engineering (except for chemical, which City does not offer), economics, communications (for those with previous academic experience), and actuarial science. The music department is unique because the focus is on ethnomusicology. It is often labeled as 'alternative' because electric, composition, and ethnomusicology classes are offered, but not music history classes. Although it is not a requirement, it is always a good idea for music majors to put together a brief musical 'resume' to send along with the rest of the application. Please be aware that at City University, there are additional fees to study any laboratory/studio based class. IFSA-Butler students may study at City in the fall, the spring or the full academic year, except for students wanting to study computer science, mechanical engineering and/or civil engineering, which are all academic year-long programs only. In addition, City University offers what are called 'extension classes'. These classes give study abroad students an opportunity to explore the culture of Britain outside of the classroom. Examples of classes are as follows: London events, London history, London in Literature, and European Business Culture. These classes involve field trips to relevant London sites to afford students an up-close and personal learning experience. These classes are only worth two-thirds regular credit and may be taken in addition to a regular full-course load. Each class lasts for only one semester.
Highlights:
City University is located in central London about 15 minutes away from Trafalgar Square by bus and about 15 minutes away from St. Paul's Cathedral by foot. Its centralized location makes many of the famous sites in London easily accessible, and students can get around the city from City University by taking the subway (known as the 'tube') which is also within walking distance of the campus. City University's student population a large percentage of students who come from outside of the United Kingdom. It's an extremely internationalized campus, and British students may constitute only 50% of some classes. The average age of a City University student is 26, and perhaps for this reason, there are not as many campus-sponsored social events as at some University of London schools.
