Birkbeck, University of London was founded in 1823 and was admitted as a School of the University of London in 1920. It became a fully incorporated University College in 1926. Birkbeck enjoys a great location in the Bloomsbury area of central London. Easily accessible by the London underground, it is just off Russell Square, next door to the University of London Students' Union and across from University College London, the School of Oriental and African Studies and the central University library at Senate House. Bloomsbury itself is a fascinating area, famous as the home of the British Museum and noted for its literary, intellectual and artistic associations. All IFSA-Butler students at Birkbeck register as visiting students of the College and have access to the extensive social and recreational facilities of the nearby University of London Student Union (ULU). ULU's seven-story building houses a restaurant, bars, Unimart, concert hall, music room, entertainment complex, gym, heated pool, sports courts and meeting rooms for student clubs and societies of all kinds. Full-time enrollment in the Birkbeck program is four courses or 3 courses and an internship.

The University of London is, in fact, made up of many separate institutions (such as Birkbeck, University of London) and these units are scattered all over London. In the broadest sense London becomes your campus for the semester. You will be living in and commuting around one of the world's most exciting and sophisticated cities in the world with unbelievable opportunities to enjoy theater, opera, ballet, cinema, and musical events of all sorts.
