Overview Students will gain a global perspective on the experience of disability within a South American culture. In addition to knowledge and skills training, students will be able to try a hands-on approach in working with Peruvian adults and children with various disabilities. The University of Kansas summer study abroad program in Peru offers students the opportunity to gain an international perspective on the social, educational, and non-governmental services available to Peruvian adults and children with various disabilities and their families in the coastal and mountain regions of Peru. The program is hosted by the Centro Ann Sullivan del Peru (CASP), an internationally recognized leader in providing high quality educational programs for persons with different abilities. Participants will visit public and private centers and schools serving children with special needs in both Lima and Cusco. Participants will also visit organizations and groups that serve adults with disabilities. In addition, participants will visit universities in Lima to hear presentations by renowned disability leaders and scholars on various aspects of independent living and disability in Peru. Students will also have the opportunity to visit many of Peru's rich historical and archaeological sites. This program includes visits to sites of interest in Lima and Cusco such as the Archaeology Museum, Museum of Gold, San Isidro, Barranco, and the Indian Market as well as field trip to Machu Picchuthe lost city of the Inca. Centro Ann Sullivan del Peru (CASP) The Centro Ann Sullivan del Perú was founded by Dr. Liliana Mayo in 1979. Beginning with just eight students, CASP now serves more than 450 students and their families. CASP is a non-profit organization serving individuals with different abilities (mental retardation, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, etc.) and their families through a variety of center-based and community-based programs. It is also an internationally recognized research center and training facility for issues in mobility.

Academic Program ABSC 479 Study Abroad Topics In: Peruvian Culture & Disability (3 credits) Undergraduate ABSC 894 Study Abroad Topics In: Peruvian Culture & Disability (3 credits) Graduate This study abroad course is designed to provide students with a greater understanding and experience of the issues facing Peruvians with disabilities. The course will consist of guest lectures that highlight various aspects of disability in Peruvian life. Disabilities will be broadly covered and will also address issues across the life-span. In addition to lectures, students will learn experientially through a broad array of site visits, participation in Peruvian cultural activities, and personal interactions with Peruvians with disabilities. Program Itinerary (tentative) *May 23 Arrival in Lima. *May 24 Guided tour of Colonial and Modern Lima. Afternoon visit to the National Museum of Archaeology. Group dinner. *May 25 Tour of CASP facilities and overview of CASP programs. Presentation on supported employment. *May 26 Site visitation to CASP community based programs in Lima. Group dinner. *May 27 Field trip to the National Institute of Rehabilitation in Callao. Afternoon visit to the Miraflores Plaza (Larcomar). *May 28 Panel discussions: Disability History and Policy Change for Peruvians with Disabilities. the Pontificia Universidad Católica - Lima Group Lunch (scheduled with Congressman Michael Urtecho Tentative). *May 29 Field trip to San Isidro. Topic: Social welfare and accessibility in the municipality of San Isidro. Group lunch at Chifa restaurant. After noon field trip to Lima Rehab. Center for the Blind. Evening trip to Las Brisas del Titicaca (musical extravaganza). *May 30 Community field trips on supportive employment (e.g., Wongs Supermercado). Lunch on own. Afternoon supportive entrepreneurship discussions at CASP. *May 31 Flight to Cusco, high in the Andes Mountains. Tour of Cusco and the surrounding Incan ruins. Group dinner at the Inka Grill. *June 1 Day trip to Machu Picchu (via Rail Perú to Aguas Calientes). *June 2 Visit various agencies working with street children with disabilities, other non-profit organizations working with children with severe disabilities. *June 3 Visiting disability organizations in Lima. *June 4 Morning flight to return to Lima and Hoteles Exclusive. Afternoon on your own (e.g., Indian market in Miraflores). *June 5 Wheelchair athletics; Independent Living in Peru; Peruvian life for people who are deaf. *June 6 Field trip to Peruvian Museums . Group dinner. Depart for U.S. later in the evening. *June 7 Return to U.S.
