Description:
Dive into a Spanish language and culture immersion program in Merida, Mexico. Mérida is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Yucatán. Students of all language levels are welcome on this four-week summer program, where students are immersed both culturally and linguistically in this colonial city. Classes will have a special focus on the culture and history of Mexico and specifically the Yucatan. The Central College on-site director will organize day trips and excursions to introduce both the city Merida and various cultural highlights of the Yucatan peninsula.
Highlights:
Merida , the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan, was one of the great cities of colonial Mexico. Signs of its Spanish-ruled past are visible everywhere, from the cathedral, the oldest in the American continent, to the grand colonial mansions which line its streets. Yet the visitor will quickly realize that Merida was and is still the capital of a region which is primarily Mayan. The people and culture of the Yucatan are an engaging and complex mixture of European and Native American wealth and poverty. With its easy access to Caribbean beaches and Mayan ruins, small pueblos and modern resorts, Merida provides an excellent base from which to explore this fascinating and unique culture.
