Marine Archaeology in the Aegean Sea

Term: Summer

Description:
The abundance of marine and coastal archaeological sites in the Aegean Sea, legacy of the ancient civilizations that have emerged here, provided the inspiration for the creation of this unique course. Through a combination of balanced field work and classroom sessions, students discover the very significant role of the marine element in the development of successive Aegean cultures and civilizations. The course focuses on the applied techniques involved in marine and coastal archaeological study. Field excursions to coastal, foreshore and underwater sites with Neolithic settlements, Cycladic, Classical or Roman wrecks and Archaic sanctuaries create our journey through time. Students are taught how to detect man-made breaks in nature's chaotic patterns that reveal astonishing finds in clear, shallow water. Underwater photography, search, survey and excavation techniques are some of the skills introduced. Our guest lecturers and staff make presentations on renowned discoveries and prominent archaeological projects they have been involved with. Nestling at the heart of the Cyclades, the crossroads of ancient maritime routes linking mainland Greece to Asia Minor, Paros is the perfect setting for these courses.
Highlights:
* Visits to several special Greek museums with rare exhibits that were retrieved from the sea. * Snorkeling over the two ancient ports of Corinth, visits to Delos, visits to foreshore quarries and structures in shallow water, underwater photography, location of wrecks and ancient foundations, visits to neolithic, cycladic, minoan, geometric, archaic, classical, roman, byzantine and more recent sites surrounded by curious underwater channels carved onto the bedrock, visits to many more underwater sites around Paros, Antiparos, Despotiko and Erimonissia, a visit to the Bodrum Museum of Marine Archaeology and the INA branch in Turkey. * Optional weekwnd visits to the famous Santorini Minoan village, diving on recent wrecks and underwater caves with stalactites. * Visiting lecturers present ongoing underwater projects in Greece. * Several films are screened in which the Director was involved in the past, like National Geographic expeditions and marine archaeological excavations in Greece with Jacques-Yves Cousteau.
