Instituto Cultural Oaxaca
Mexico
Term: Throughout the year
Dates: Throughout the year
Description:
The Institute Cultural Oaxaca is your gateway to Mexico and to the Spanish language. The Institute's language immersion program offers you the opportunity to experience Mexican culture and understand it through the acquisition of Spanish. The combination of our intensive Spanish language program and daily afternoon cultural programs enables students to immerse themselves in the language as well as in the rich Mexican culture. The Institute is located in enchanting colonial Oaxaca, where you will discover both modern Mexico and ancient indigenous culture. The indigenous groups who once inhabited the nearby archaeological sites of Monte Albán, Mitla and Yagul continue to influence the language, lifestyle, and art of the area. The heart of the city of Oaxaca is the zócalo, or main square, which is surrounded by a mix of colonial architecture and indigenous marketplace. The zócalo, just a short walk from the Institute, is host to concerts, parades, and sidewalk cafes that provide a comfortable setting for relaxing after class.
Highlights:
Immersion Program: The Institute offers seven hours of daily instruction, including grammar and conversation classes and cultural workshops. There are seven class levels, from beginning Spanish to advanced Mexican and Latin American Literature, to assure that you will find the correct level of instruction. We will give you a placement exam upon arrival at the Institute to place you in the appropriate class level. Class size is kept minimum (average 5-6 students) and never exceeds 10 students. Our teachers are native speakers and university educated with years of teaching experience. They are more than prepared to present you with a class that will enhance your speaking, listening and general comprehension skills while introducing you to Mexican culture. To maximize learning, our instructors incorporate a variety of teaching methods including the use of films, role-play, music, etc. Monday through Friday, you will participate in a three hour morning grammar class followed by one hour of conversation class. Through this combination, you will not only learn Spanish grammar, but also how to apply that knowledge in everyday conversational use. During the afternoons, you can join any of our cultural workshops, such as Oaxacan cooking, weaving, conversation, or salsa. To complete the day, we offer an intercambio program, where you meet for an hour daily one-on-one with an local student learning English to practice both of your conversation skills. Private classes can be arranged by request.
