Term: Summer
Dates: 3 July-4 August
Description:
Study Abroad in Britain is an academic program. Participants will earn college credit while living in the very heart of England, in Nottinghamshire. Participants will visit: London, Shakespeare Country (Stratford-upon-Avon), Warwick Castle (one of England's great medieval castles), Newstead Abbey (Lord Byron's ancestral home)and York. Other, optional visits may be made to such sites as: Sherwood Forest, made famous through the tales of Robin Hood, Chatsworth, Hadrian's Wall (built by the Romans during their occupation of the island), The Lake District , Brighton, Edinburgh, and Paris. Nottinghamshire is an area of England that knows and celebrates its history while anticipating its future. Once engaged in farming, industry, lace and candy making--and an occasional involvement in things royal (Richard III sequestered himself in Nottingham Castle just prior to his defeat in the Battle of Bosworth Field, just a few miles outside of Nottingham), its future is in its major universities and colleges, its world class health care facilities, as well as a stunning amount of new business and housing construction. The people are generous and outgoing; there's a sense of community pride and accomplishment. The visitor feels instantly at home. Mesa Community College's Study Abroad in Britain program will be held at New College Nottingham (NCN), located at the edge of Nottingham's City Centre in the historic Lace Market district, home to over one hundred lace factories during the 19th century. The Adams Building, home of NCN, Nottingham, is one of the city's premier Victorian landmarks.
Highlights:
Nottingham, famous for its association with Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest, is in England's beautiful Midlands, a short and easy train ride from many of England's most famous cities and sites: London; the university centers of Oxford and Cambridge; York, northern England's medieval walled city ; Blackpool, England's Las Vegas; Liverpool, home of the Beatles; even Edinburgh, Scotland is just a short train ride away! Nottingham itself is a lively and growing city, featuring Nottingham Castle (built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century), two of England's finest universities, a rich cultural focus (music, theatre, dance, art), a 500-acre deer park, a dynamic night life, great "pubs," superb internationally recognized sports arenas, and the annual "Goose Fair," a centuries old traditional event.
