- Multi-Country
Denmark
Term: Summer
Description:
DIS in cooperation with the University of Maryland offers an innovative, six-credit summer program on HIV/AIDS in Europe. The program is designed for highly motivated undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in medicine and with a serious concern for understanding the complexity of patients' lives. It aims at: * Providing an understanding of the complexity of HIV/AIDS from a biological and medical perspective, including epidemiology and treatment * Sensitizing students to the political, social, economic, and moral issues concerning HIV/AIDS * Informing students about Scandinavian and other European health care systems * Contributing to broad intercultural competence The program consists of two consecutive three-credit courses: Understanding and Treating HIV/AIDS in Denmark and Amsterdam, and, HIV/AIDS in the UK: Comparative Perspectives. Students are required to enroll in both courses.
Highlights:
During the first three weeks, students will focus on medical practice and policy in Scandinavia with respect to HIV/AIDS, and partake in a one-week study tour throughout Denmark and Amsterdam (hospitals and research institutions related to HIV/AIDS). In the second part of the program, you will focus on the socio-political context and comparative aspects of health care with respect to HIV/AIDS, spending two weeks in Copenhagen and one week in London. Students reside in kollegiums while in Copenhagen and in hostels during study tours.
