Dates: Academic Year: Fall (Aug 23-Dec 18) and/or Spring (Jan 15-May 17) Terms
Description:
Migration & Identity is an indisciplinary program designed for students majoring in sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, migration studies, minority studies, political science or related fields. It offers insights into: * How globalization, migration and integration affect cultural and national identity in Europe; how identity is constructed and negociated; and into issues of representation and power * How migration has influenced and still influences Europe, as previously homogeneous welfare societies struggle with issues of integration and identity * How stereotypes are constructed among both minorities and majority groups - and how stereotypes can be challenged Students enrolled in the Migration & Identity program will take the core course, Cross-Cultural Encounters in a European Context, and participate in two course-integrated study tours. Beyond the core course and study tours, students may select any combination of courses from the DIS curriculum, barring scheduling conflicts.
Highlights:
Study tours include a short regional study tour to the Danish-German border region early in the semester and a longer European study tour to Lithuania (fall) or Turkey (spring) during the mid-semester study break. The Migration & Identity study tours address issues of ethnicity, nationality, ethnic and national conflict, migration, integration and multiculturalism through visits to immigrant organizations, talks with politicians and minority representatives, and tours to historical sites associated with the overall topic. Additionally, all courses include field study visits to relevant institutions and organizations in Copenhagen.
