This program is designed as an introduction to Argentine Culture through the written and visual representation of some of its most iconic figures (Che Guevara, Eva Perón, Jorge Luis Borges, the mothers of Plaza de Mayo, Diego Maradona, Quino's Mafalda, and Carlos Gardel among others). One of the objectives of the course will be to familiarize ourselves with the work of these authors/and or political figures and to study the ways in which they have been represented in different biographies and film. Taught in Buenos Aires, one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities in Latin America, the course will take advantage of the rich cultural resources of the city. We will be visiting the Evita Museum, the Che Guevara house, historical sites (Plaza de Mayo), and a soccer museum. Courses Offered: * Spanish 175 (4 units) - Topics in Spanish American Culture - Specific historical tendencies and issues in Spanish American culture(s) from pre-colombian times to present. Sources studied may include literature, film, art, journalism and performance. Approaches to material may address issues of aesthetics, politics, identity, and globalization May be repeated one time for credit if content differs. - GE credit: Arts and Humanities, Diversity * Spanish 198 (4 units) - Directed Group Study - GE credit: None
Highlights:
The program has a social awareness component in which students will be able to perform community work at "Del niño Latinoamericano" soup kitchen, a non profit organization to help disadvantadged children in Buenos Aires. There will also be a trip to Colonia and a three day visit to the Iguazú Waterfalls.

Fees for Summer Abroad are comprised of the Summer Abroad Program Fee, Course Unit Fee, and Accommodation and Activities Fee.
