What is Scotland? Who are the Scots? How has the medium of film contributed to these cultural constructs? To answer these questions, we will study popular film from the silent era to the contemporary. Our explorations will unfold against a backdrop of Scottish history and selections from key literary figures such as Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, Muriel Spark, and Irvine Welsh. We will be based in Edinburgh, one of Europes most beautiful cities, during the Edinburgh Festival, the worlds largest arts festivaland well take the opportunity to attend several events. Field trips will visit film location sites in Edinburgh and throughout Scotland, including the spectacular Highlands. Dr. Johns will co-teach the course with award-winning Scottish screenwriter Ninian Dunnett. English 160 (4 units) Film as Narrative Prerequisite: course 3 or University Writing Program 1. Highlights:
We will be attending selected events of Europe's premier cultural festival, the Edinburgh Festival, as well as taking field trips to the Highlands and St. Andrews. Other proposed field trips include: Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, The Royal Mile, Royal Botanic Gardens, New Town, the National Gallery, Arthur's Seat, and The Museum of Scotland

Fees for Summer Abroad are comprised of the Summer Abroad Program Fee, Course Unit Fee, and Accommodation and Activities Fee. The Accommodation and Activities Fee includes lodging, select meals, and select field trips. The program fee covers group health insurance and printed matter. Air fare is not included.
