Tropical Ecology Summer Program
Ecuador
Term: Summer
Dates: Mid-July - Mid-August
Description:
This program emphasizes hands-on learning of field methods used in ecological research and will consist of daily lectures and field activities as well as group research projects, and discussions. The course is also attended by several Ecuadorian students who help serve as cultural ambassadors to international participants. This program will provide students with firsthand knowledge and experience in some of the richest ecosystems on earth. From the dry Pacific coast to the steamy Amazon rain forests, while traversing the Andes Mountains along the way, this field course will proved students with a solid background in ecological principles and field methods, while giving a realistic view of the biological, sociological, and economic complexities underlying conservation issues.
Highlights:
While experiencing the various and diverse ecosystems in Ecuador, students will experience Pacific beaches and the pristine rain forests of the Amazonian basin, however, the majority of the program will be spent at the Tiputini Biodiversity station which may in fact be located in the most biologically diverse place on the planet. The station is facilitated by an extensive trail network and two canopy towers. The program begins in Quito, Ecuador and proceeds over the western cordillera of the Andes. Students will hike and camp in the cloud forest at the El Pahuma Orchid Reserve and descend to the coastal lowlands and this tropical dry forest ecosystem. Next, the course will travel to the humid lowlands of Amazonian Ecuador, staying at the Jatun Sacha Biological Station. The rest of the course is spent at the Tiputini Biological diversity station, situated in the center of one of the world's "diversity hot spots."
