Description: The KIIS program in China offers an unparalleled opportunity for students to gain a better understanding of this vast country. Participants spend time in four world-famous cities: Hongkong, Kunming, Xi'an, and Beijing.

KIIS China Program

Highlights: In the 21st century, China looms as one of the most important countries for the United States. U.S.-China relations are today, perhaps, more complicated and multidimensional than at any time in history, largely due to the dramatic changes that have occurred within China in the past century and particularly in the past twenty years of economic reform. The KIIS China program offers an unparalleled opportunity for Americans to gain a better understanding of this vast country.

The program will take place in four different cities: Hong Kong, Kunming, Xi'an and Beijing. The majority of the time will be spent in the southwestern city of Kunming. A bustling city of approximately three million inhabitants, Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province. The city is an ideal location for a China summer program. Located on a high plateau, surrounded by mountains and on the shores of one of China's largest lakes, Kunming has traditional, two-story dwellings and shady lanes which coexist with skyscrapers and busy highways.

The program will last six weeks. For the first several days of the program, students will explore the former British colony of Hong Kong and recover from jet lag. Students will then travel on to Kunming for one month of study on the campus of Yunnan Normal University located in the university quarter of the city.

Students will travel to the Xi'an and Beijing for the final ten days. In Xi'an, students will view such sights as the world famous terra cotta army of Qin Shihuang, China's first emperor. Students will then spend approximately four days touring Beijing. This will include visits to the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, and Tienanmen Square.

Orientation sessions will be held in Kentucky prior to departure and in Hong Kong and Kunming on arrival in order to provide students with important information about living and studying in China.
