Description:
The Mediterranean Cultural History Tour (MEDECHT) is a completely unique approach to university study abroad. It combines a thorough tour of major cultural and historical sites throughout Europe and the Mediterranean with intense academic study of the culture and history being experienced. It's an ideal learning environment because it integrates reading and writing with direct involvement to give a richer understanding of the subject than book learning alone could possibly provide. The Mediterranean Cultural History Tour is a 35 day program traveling from Zurich to Athens. Zurich to Athens 6 credit hours Length: 36 days Program Fee: $4,350* (Non-EMU Students) *does not include tuition and airfare Switzerland, Italy and Greece: Zurich, Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples, Pompeii, Brindisi, Delphi, Meteora, Thessaloniki, Athens, Mycenae, Olympia, Nafplion, Crete.
Highlights:
The program fee covers the extensive intra-European and intra-Mediterranean program travel. Most of our intra-European transportation will be done by rail, aboard second class express trains. Chartered buses will sometimes be used for our travel in Greece. Communal taxis will be used when convenient. We will take a cruise on the Seine, and the Rhine rivers. We plan to travel by overnight ship from Italy to Greece, Athens to Crete and by chartered bus to Olympia. The program fee covers the costs of tour hotels, pensions, hostels and couchettes on overnight trains. Accommodations provide participants with a variety of living experiences. Most accommodations are multiple occupancy. International Youth Hostels usually provide dormitory-style rooms with multiple beds, a common sink and shared restroom and shower facilities. Pensions are privately-run small hotels. Hotels are chosen for their central location. The Cultural History Tours are first and foremost academic travel programs. Students are required to enroll in and complete academic courses for credit. Because we follow an extensive travel itinerary, instructional delivery is very different from the pattern of fixed class time and standard contact hours of campus courses. On the Cultural History Tours, class sessions are usually scheduled around or during the program activities that take up most of the day: visits to museums, monuments, cathedrals and temples, historic sites, governmental institutions, etc. Thus in a sense most of the waking hours of each day are contact hours because students are actively engaged in some aspect of history, art, culture and politics.
