Exploring Science in our World: Ecology in Context, Faculty-Led

  Venezuela
    Merida,  Valencia

Term: Winter

Description: Study and explore ecology in a setting rich in diverse landscapes and innumerable species of flora and fauna.

Longwood University 3-credit faculty-led program.

Henri Pittier National Park
Henri Pittier was created in February 13, 1937. It is located in the north-central region of Venezuela, in the State of Aragua. It covers an area of 107,800 hectares (including coastal range). It has an abrupt topography with steep slopes. Many of the rocks and stones in the park are 60 - 80 million years old; therefore many of the plants growing here have had millions of years to establish and adapt to the constant pressures and changes of evolution.

Nearby villages include Choroni, Cuyagua, Chuao, Cata, La Cienaga, Ocumare, and Turiamo. Because of its wide range of elevations, it has many rivers and streams and is rich in fauna and flora. It is the hotspot of the Tropical Andes, so-called for its large amount of endemic species. There are large trees, arboreal ferns, and several species of ornamental plants. The most notable of which is a rare plant with gigantic leaves scientifically known as Gunnera Pittierana, which is also endemic.

The great diversity of flora gives the park a variety of habitats. Wild fauna is extremely diversified and includes many species of birds. Mammals, serpents, lizards and amphibians are abundant.
