interstudy: University of KwaZulu-Natal Durban
South Africa
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring, Summer
Dates: January-June August-November June-August
Description:
The University of KwaZulu-Natal is situated in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, and consists of two centers: one in the coastal city of Durban, and one in Pietermaritzburg some 45 miles inland. The university was established in 1910 in Pietermaritzburg but expanded after World War I with an extension at Durban. The number of students seeking admission to the university grows annually. Over the last twelve years the university has steadily increased its proportion of non-White students (including Black South African, Indian and Colored students) who now make up more than seventy percent of the student population. General Administration, Finance and the International Office are centralized in Durban. All teaching departments at the two campuses are fully independent, and each campus has its own personality. The Durban campus offers coursework in the following faculties: Education; Engineering; Health Sciences; Humanities; Development & Social Sciences; Management Studies; Science & Agriculture. Durban is KwaZulu-Natal's largest city and offers an intriguing blend of the East, the West and of Africa. Within a stone's throw of the office blocks, theaters, shopping malls and cafés of the business center is the Indian Ocean, lined with sand beaches and palm trees. The university is a ten-minute drive from the coastline. Durban also has the largest port in Southern Africa, with an active nightlife, and is linked to Johannesburg by a high-speed motorway.
