Dates: Fall, Spring, Summer
Description:
The Istituto Internazionale di Studi Classici di Orvieto is a fully accredited study abroad program for fall, spring and summer semesters. Its focus is on classical studies, Roman and Etruscan archaeology and art, and archaeological excavation, however, students from all majors are welcome to apply. The curriculum is open to undergraduate and graduate students, and courses are taught in English. Unique to the Orvieto International Institute are its summer archaeological excavations targeted for students specializing in Classics or Anthropology. In addition to the classical studies curriculum, visiting faculty from the University of Arizona teach courses in other academic fields such as Studio Art, Italian, Political Science, and Architecture, to name a few. Students are led on field trips to spectacular achaeological sites and cities such as Rome, Pompeii and Tivoli.
Highlights:
Location: The Institute is located in Orvieto's central town square, next to the famous Orvieto Cathedral, one of the most beautiful and historic locations in all of Italy. The Institute's modern facilities are housed in a 14th-century building and offer students high speed internet access. The Institute is located near the train station from where hourly trains reach Rome in just 45 minutes. Housing: Students live in nice, fully furnished apartments, all located in the historical district in Orvieto and within a walking distance from the school. Generally, an apartment with two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and living room, is shared by four students. Housing costs are included in the program fee, and they will also cover all expenses (water, gas, electricity bills), sheets and towels (changed once a week) and a weekly cleaning of the house. In most cases, students will be able to use a washing machine for about 2,50 Euros. There are also some other lodging options, such as living with an Italian family or in convents/hotels. Field Trips: In addition to classroom courses, students will participate in several field-trips, including a three-day excursion to the Paestum, Pompeii, and Vesuvio area. Other trips include full-day visits to Tarquinia and Cerveteri (two of the most important Etruscan towns, Tarquinia being especially famous for the painted tombs); Rome, Chianciano and the Chiusi Region; Tivoli (where we will visit Hadrian's Villa, the astonishing architectural project of the Emperor Hadrian, and Villa d'Este); Perugia and Todi (two of the most beautiful Umbrian hill towns, with Etruscan, Roman, Medieval remains).
