Description:
In Italy students will reside in Milan, Italy's commercial and industrial heart and center for both design and architecture in Europe. Florence and Venice will be included as day trips. In Egypt, students will reside in the Dokki area of Cairo to visit the National Museum and other important sites. The trip to Giza to experience the Pyramids of Giza and Sphinx is a short ride by bus from Cairo. Also, while in Egypt, the group will complete a 5-day, 4-night cruise from Luxor to Aswan. The pyramids, the temples along the Nile and hieroglyphics will be introduced within a historical context but through the lens of design and communication. Goals of the program are: 1) To provide a cultural and historical background for the study and understanding of architectrue, art, and design in Italy and Egypt. 2) To provide a foundation for understanding the complex factors that influenced the development of communication and architecture in Italy and Egypt. 3) To provide an understanding of trends and factors that influence contemporary design and architecture in Italy and Egypt. 4) To provide a context for the discussion of the great treasures of Egypt as design 5) To develop the student's appreciation for the multiple perspectives and viewpoints on design and culture in Italy and Egypt 6) To provide a foundation for continuing study and research in Italy and Egypt.
Highlights:
The program will utilize numerous methods of instruction through its duration; formal lectures, on -site discussions and lectures, student presentations, team projects and individual appointments. Visits to professional places of business including: architecture and design offices, marketing centers, retail shops and showrooms, companies and factories are included in the program to provide insight into the contemporary role and operation of business in Italy. Visits to museums and historic and contemporary architectural sites are included to provide for a historical foundation for the understanding of design and architecture in Italy. Academically oriented walking tours will be conducted by the director of the program to provide an understanding of city planning.
