Description: Graduate and undergraduate credit are offered on this program. This is the tenth year of this particular program offering in Italy. The program is based in Milan and then later in Barcelona. Visits to other cities include Florence for a weekend, Venice, and Lugano, Switzerland. Students will reside in Milan, Italy's commercial and industrial heart and center for both design and architecture in Europe. In Florence, students will be guests at a small hotel housed in a landmark 500-year-old building located in the heart of the city. In Barcelona the group will stay in a hotel at Las Ramblas, the central most Boulevard of which cuts through the heart of Barcelona's city centre. La Rambla is an iconic and busy street, popular with both tourists and locals alike.

An overview and blend of both historical and contemporary design and architecture will be introduced by means of on-site study in Italy and Spain. The program will integrate historical information and contemporary trends in architecture and design as it relates to the unique cultural fabric of Italy and Spain.

Goals of the program are: 1) to provide a cultural and historical background for the study and understanding of architectrue, art, and design in Italy and Spain, 2) to provide a foundation for understanding the complex factors that influenced the development of communication and architecture in Italy and Spain, 3) to provide an understanding of trends and factors that influence contemporary design and architecture in Italy and Spain, and 4) to develop the student's appreciation for multiple perspectives and viewpoints on design and culture in Italy and Spain.

Design, Architecture, and Art in Italy and Spain

Highlights: The program will utilize numerous methods of instruction through its duration; formal lectures, on-site discussions and lectures, student presentations, team projects and individual appointments. Visits to professional places of business including: architecture and design offices, marketing centers, retail shops and showrooms, companies and factories are included in the program to provide insight into the contemporary role and operation of business in Italy and Spain. Visits to museums and historic and contemporary architectural sites are included to provide for a historical foundation for the understanding of design and architecture in Italy and Spain. Academically oriented walking tours will be conducted by the director of the program to provide an understanding of city planning.
