CIEE January Spanish Program in Guanajuato, Mexico: January Term

  Mexico
  • Central Highlands:
  • Guanajuato

Term: Winter
Dates: Winter 2.5 weeks: early January- mid/late January

Description:
The Spanish Language program aims to maximize learning in the short time available, create critical dialogues across language and culture, and widen student's ideas about the themes at hand. We hope students leave Guanjauto confident about their new knowledge, humble about how much more there is still to learn, and passionate about finding ways to continue this learning long after the program ends.

Academic Program
Students take one intensive, three-credit course for the duration of the program. the Community-Based Spanish course, offered at an intermediate or advanced level, emphasizes language learning through critical and constant engagement with local community members. Class meets daily for five hours and includes grammar and conversation, as well as daily explorations in the community that are facilitated within the class period.

Academic Culture
The course is designed for U.S. students, and for the most part, teaching and learning methods are familiar to them. While in-class methods are fairly traditional, the secondary components of the course utilize reflection, critical thinking, and experiential learning. Between the two components, the course includes a mix of written assignments, oral presentations, field exercises, creative projects, and formal in-class examinations. The maximum number of students per class is twelve.

Highlights:

  • Jump into an intense two and half-week language immersion experience
  • Immerse yourself in a vibrant and colorful community
  • Change pace with a study trip to Mexico City
  • Take part in a rural service option

Cultural Activities and Field Trips
This program includes one overnight excursion to Mexico City to visit the pyramids and world-famous art museums. Cultural activities are coordinated within the community, including things such as craft workshops, cooking seminars, museum visits, and day excursions to nearby sites of interest.

Immersion
This program also offers a rural service option in conjunction with a primary school located in a small community near the city. This experience is led by Eduardo Rodríguez, Assistant Resident Director, and is designed to provide students with a unique experience interacting with community members in this small town. Students work with the school to run simple workshops with local children.
