interstudy - Trinity College Dublin
Ireland
Term: Academic Year
Dates: Middle October - Middle June
Description:
Trinity is a large campus extending over 40 acres in the center of Dublin. The west end includes five quadrangles of squares with several buildings from the 18th Century. Further east, the recently completed Hamilton buildings house many of Trinity's science and technology departments. Between the two is the vast college park with its sports fields that remain one of the largest green spaces in the city. Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland, is considered by many to be one of the best settings of any European city. With one of the youngest populations of Europe's major cities, Dublin offers an highly social atmosphere. As the economy has grown in recent years, many fashionable boutiques and restaurants have appeared in the area; for those on a budget there is an abundance of second-hand bookshops, street markets, fast food outlets and ethnic eateries of all kinds, many located in the revitalized Temple Bar area opposite the front entrance to the college. A notable feature of Dublin life is the tradition of live music in every venue, from street performers to the National Concert Hall as well as 'singing pubs' in which traditional music still flourishes. With its wide streets and gracious architecture, few parts of the city are far from the sights and smells of the sea, and many of the city center streets end with the vista of mountains. Trinity College was founded by Queen Elizabeth I in 1592, and celebrated its 400th anniversary in 1992. It is the oldest University in Ireland and is situated in the heart of Dublin. With hundreds of Dubliners using it as a daily thoroughfare, Trinity is central to Irish life. Writers such as Swift, Beckett, Wilde, Goldsmith and Ireland's first President Douglas Hyde were educated there. Trinity has a combined faculty and student population of 14,750. It offers undergraduate degrees in 6 faculties including: Arts, Business, Economics, Social Studies, the Sciences and Engineering.
