Shakespeare--Live!

  England
  • London:
  • London

Term: Summer
Dates: June 20 - July 18

Description: The primary goal of this program is to get students to enjoy performances of Shakespeares plays. During our four-week stay in London, we will see and read at least five of those plays, including one produced in Stratford-upon-Avon (where we will also tour Shakespeare houses). We will watch and discuss video versions of some of the plays we will see. We will take a walking tour of Shakespeare-related sites in Londons South Bank, tour the Globe Theatre and Exhibition, and (we hope) talk with one or more Shakespearean actor/directors. Class and the plays will take place Monday through Thursday, so weekends will be free to explore London and to travel elsewhere in the British Isles or on the continent. Readings for 2008 will be announced after the production schedules in London (at The Globe and elsewhere) are released.

Shakespeare--Live!

Highlights: Studying plays on site is a unique experience. We will consider dramatic movements within the century, trying to see the plays in their historical context. Working in small groups, students will actively explore theatres, museums and neighborhoods important to the eras and playwrights studied. There will be a day trip to Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford, where we will also see a Royal Company production. Guest lecturers will be invited to discuss Shakespeare and theatre.
