English Literature: London
England
Term: Fall
Dates: inquire for more info.
Description:
Students majoring in English can study British literature at its source during the fall semester. They may choose among upper-division English courses specific to the English Literature program and from courses offered during the fall semester in the London Broad Curriculum program. This allows them to progress toward their degrees on schedule, while gaining the immense benefits of the London experience. As they read works by writers such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Keats, Dickens, and Woolf, they can visit the settings of the stories, the homes of the authors, museum exhibits, and productions of plays. Many of the courses are repeatable up to 24 credit hours, so students may repeat a course in the vastly different and enriching learning environment of London. Students will visit the intellectually-rich neighborhood of Bloomsbury as the center of their study of the Bloomsbury Group of writers, philosophers, and artists. Particular attention will be placed on the Americans who have lived in London and the effect of their experience and the impact of London on American literature. The outlying neighborhoods of London will be used to trace the major London authors to their homes and work places. Drama will also be explored as the students read the authors whose works are playing on the London stage.
Highlights:
The FSU Study Centre is located in the Bloomsbury area of London. Well before the establishment of its world famous inhabitants -- The British Museum and the colleges of the University of London -- Bloomsbury was already an area associated with the literary, artistic and cultural life of the city and the realm, and this association has continued into the present. A casual glance at the blue markers on the buildings of the neighborhood reveal that these were once home to social satirist and artist William Hogarth, Charles Dickens, John Cardinal Newman, William Butler Yeats, Virginia Woolf, and "The Bloomsbury Group", to name a few. The rich past and exciting present of London constantly intertwine for our students. They walk the streets in the footsteps of Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Milton; they attend the clubs where the Beatles played their gigs; they go to the theatre made famous by Bernard Shaw, Gilbert and Sullivan, and Andrew Lloyd Webber. A few minutes from the study center lies not only the West End, the major theatre district of London, but Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, the National Gallery, and opera and ballet theatres. The esteemed British Museum is only one block away.
