First Year Abroad- Valencia, Spain

Term: Academic Year
Dates: Fall 2007-Summer 2008

Description: Academic Year Abroad: An international program for the global-thinking, adventurous student. This program has been specifically designed for incoming out-of-state Freshman to Florida State University who want to start their academic career in global way.

Florida State University's new Academic Year Abroad (AYA) Program in Valencia, Spain allows students to complete the first twelve months of their FSU careers studying abroad with our International Programs. The incentives for taking advantage of this opportunity are extraordinary and compelling.

Valencia, Spain
Though our history is not quite as long as in other locations, our connections and commitment in Spain are no less important or cherished. Currently located in the full-service international living-learning community of Galileo Galilei, adjacent to the Universidad Politecnica campus, FSU students have access to incomparable university facilities and services, including library, computer lab and sports facilities. Students in Valencia enjoy being on the Mediterranean Sea, dining on local cuisine (it's the home of Paella!) and exploring the outstanding museums of Spain's third largest city.

Highlights: Degree Progression for Almost All Majors
We place great emphasis on ensuring progress toward graduation will not be impeded by participating in this program. The classes offered meet requirements of the Liberal Studies Program, many minors, and first year prerequisites for almost any major. We strongly encourage students to declare one of the exploratory majors, regardless of site (there are four exploratory majors: Communication; Human Services & Social Sciences; Creative Arts, Humanities & Letters; Science, Technology & Engineering; and Education & Teaching.) We also offer classes required for students who are "Business, not formally admitted" majors. This program also meets the summer residency requirements for all FSU students.

Academic Benefits
Other academic benefits include small classes, personal attention from your faculty members, and courses which incorporate local academic, historical, and cultural resources into the fabric of student learning.

Out-of-State Tuition Waivers
Upon completing twelve months of international study on one of the designated programs, participants will receive tuition waivers which will cover the out-of-state portion of tuition for the remainder of their first undergraduate degree at FSU in Tallahassee. Spread across a typical four year degree program, this could represent a savings of $40,000 for the European options and $55,000 for the Panamanian option! This arrangement is contingent upon the student remaining in good academic and judicial standing throughout their FSU career. Students must attend consecutive semesters without interruption, progressing toward their degree completion, and staying "on map".
