IES Abroad: Sydney, Australia

  Australia
  • Sydney:
  • Sydney

Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring

Description: Sydney, the site of Australia's first European settlement, is Australia's largest city and home to a fifth of the Australian population. The commercial and business center of Australia, Sydney is a sophisticated, cosmopolitan city that generates excitement and features a population that is youthful (47% between the ages of 20 and 35) and diverse (Sydney's residents speak 140 different languages). Sydney is also a major cultural center in Australia, offering a variety of museums, theaters, a world famous opera house, and several excellent universities.

Its stunning setting, sunny days, and mild winter temperatures, also make Sydney one of the most glamorous and attractive cities on earth. Its world-famous harbor, featuring scenic cliffs, bays, and beaches, is considered by many to be the most beautiful urban harbor in the world, and local residents embrace the harbor and the many outdoor opportunities it provides with passion.

The IES Abroad program is designed to facilitate the discovery and cultural exploration of Australia by providing an integrated program of formal academic teaching and informal field study. IES Abroad students also explore these issues through the orientation program organized by IES Abroad.

The IES Abroad Sydney program offers semester, academic year, and calendar year study options with direct enrollment in three of Sydney's major universities:

- Macquarie University
- The University of New South Wales
- The University of Sydney

IES Abroad staff works closely with the staff of these three universities to provide student services and organize orientation and field trips.

Highlights:
- Enroll directly in classes at Macquarie University, the University of New South Wales, or the University of Sydney
- Access state-of-the-art laboratories and field stations for research opportunities in the sciences
- Participate in the IES Abroad orientation trip to the Blue Mountains and week-long field trip to the Great Barrier Reef
- Gain valuable work experience through for-credit internship options in fields such as business, biomedical sciences, computer sciences, politics, psychology, and public relations
- Choose from a variety of housing options such as beachside houses, downtown apartments, or on-campus residential colleges
- Unique option for advanced music students to study at one of the world's leading conservatories of music
- Benefit from on-site IES Abroad student services staff.
