Description: Our Venezuelan Medical Spanish school is located in the stunning Andean city of Merida, a 45 minutes flight from Caracas. It is famous for its perennial warm spring temperatures (80F/25C) all year round, the longest and highest cable car in the world (up to 14,000 feet), the magnificent 14,000 foot mountains that surround it with there hiking trails. Merida is very safe 'university' city - the well known Universidad de los Andes (University of the Andes). It therefore combines a vibrant city and University with the traditional feel and culture of Andean people.

The school has been operating for 10 years, and has a very close relationship with the Universidad de los Andes. The Medical Spanish program is run in partnership with the Medical Faculty of the University (for information on the medical faculty please view http://medicina.uniandes.edu.co ). Our normal Spanish Immersion Program also with a partner US College is able to ward US academic credits in Spanish etc.

The school is small (typically averaging 20 at any one time). However, it occurs an impressive range of extra activities for its students. Merida ' is the 'adventure and activities' capital of Venezuela and this is reflected in the many activities on offer. There is hiking, horse riding, para- gliding, Canyoning, rafting, mountain biking and exclusions to the famous and remote los llamos wild life area. All these activities can be organised for you to make the most of your time in Venezuela. The school also has a beach lodge for you to use at Playa Colorada, and runs trips to angel Falls, and the Orinoco Delta.

The Lonely Planet recognises Venezuela as one of the most bio diverse countries in the world. To make the most of this part of the medical program promotes you to spent time with the Waro and Pemon Indians in the Gran Sabana and Orinoco Delta respectively.

Highlights: We believe that is extremely important not only to learn Medical Spanish in a Spanish-speaking environment  but also to apply your Spanish in a very practical environment. This will both reinforce your learning, and also allow the real application of your new knowledge.

Our Medical Spanish program has partnered with the Medical faculty of the Unversidad de los Andes to offer an exciting and innovative program. This is a very intensive 6 week program. The first four weeks there are 4 hours of general Spanish in the morning (to improve important conversational and grammar skills) followed by 2 hours specialised Medical Spanish, focusing on medical terminology and information. There will be opportunities to focus on specializations, as well as practical experience at a private clinic with a practicing physician and university medical lecturer. It also includes hospital visit and conversing with patients. Alternatively, if your have more advanced Spanish, you can attend specialised Merida lectures in Spanish. In week 5 you will experience adventure as well as exposure to indigenous peoples to familiarise yourself with healthcare issues in a primitive environment. The final 6th week will be in a beautiful caribbean beach location where ongoing daily Spanish lessons with be supplemented by plenty of recreational opportunities. Through this program of Spanish language and culture, you will develop skills for improving communication with your Spanish-speaking patients as well as gaining a first hand understanding of heathcare issues in a 2nd/3rd world environment.
