The Odyssey Program
Greece
Term: Summer
Dates: June, July, August
Description:
Greece is the source of Western civilization, and the origin of European culture, which continues to influence American society today. The Odyssey Program offers students an opportunity to explore those origins with the support and guidance of a strong academic program. Studying the language, culture, history, archaeology, art history, and theatre on-site in Athens and the Peloponnese allows students to experience Greece outside the pages of their textbooks. The Program will be in Athens for 3 days in the beginning and 3 days at the end of the term. While in Athens the students will visit the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and the Archaeological Museum. In the three and a half weeks in between these days, the Program will reside in Spetses, at the Beys Hotel, which has a pool and air conditioned rooms. Classes will also take place in the hotel. The Odyssey Program is the creation of LMU and the Basil P. Caloyeras Center for Modern Greek Studies and its goal is to sponsor academic and cultural activities in Greece.
Highlights:
Spetses, at the entrance to the Bay of Argos, is a short distance by boat from Athens. Although very popular as the vacation place for many Athenians it has retained its charm and color. It is known for the distinctive architecture of its stately mansions, and the many coves and beaches, some sandy, some rocky, many still rimmed with pines. Most of the inhabitants prefer to get around on bicycles and horse-drawn carriages, which lend a special charm to the place. Being ten minutes away from the mainland, many tourists visit for weekend trips to enjoy its beauty and the atmosphere of an Aegean island.
