Study Abroad Italy / Domus Academy
Italy
Term: Fall, Spring, Summer
Dates: September - December and January - May
Description:
Founded in 1983, Domus Academy is considered one of Europe's top design schools, offering eight Master level programs during the academic year, along with summer programs. Recent industry publications proclaim Domus Academy as one of the top three international design programs. Winner of the Compasso d'Oro, Italy's most sought after design award, with a distinguished list of past lecturers such as Ettore Sottsass, Philippe Starck, Gianfranco Ferre, Neil Barrett, and Ron Arad, DA has always been a true pioneer of "Made in Italy," not simply teaching how to design products, but considering design as a complex, challenging activity which strategically contributes to direct the form and meaning of industrial production and culturally outlines different aesthetic and social visions. Furthermore, DA gives its students the opportunity to meet and to work with a wide network of design and fashion companies. For American students, DA has created four advanced-level undergraduate semester/year abroad programs taught in English. The main objective of all programs and courses is to promote collaboration--or "contamination" as DA puts it--among the various design sectors. Students are encouraged to perform in-depth analyses of design culture and to always keep in mind the past, present, and future of fashion, art, and design. Students begin with a theoretical base that includes an introduction to the instruments of their field of study that they then use in projects carried out with the aid of renowned professional designers. They are also taught to pay careful attention to marketing and communication techniques. DA students thus learn all essential aspects of design, from the initial abstract concepts to the successful presentation of the final product. DA is a member of the CUMULUS, association of European design schools. Domus Academy now offers a wide variety of programs in English, through its Regional US Office, Study Abroad Italy.
