Semester Study at the University of Leicester

  England
  • East Midlands:
  • Leicester

Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring

Description: The University of Leicester is an international center of learning with a worldwide reputation. It is a traditional British university founded in 1921 offering undergraduate degrees, masters courses and research programs. Citizens of over eighty countries are represented on campus. Each year, there are more than 1000 students from outside the United Kingdom studying the full range of subjects and courses available, and there are over 18,000 English students studying at the University as well.

Students will be able to take courses designated by Leicester as suitable for Study Abroad. A list of these courses is available at OISP, as well as the Leicester website. You will follow the same evaluation procedures and follow the same calendar as Leicester students. While at Leicester, you will probably take 3-5 courses. These courses either meet for one 50-minute session per week, or two, depending on the weight of the course. This means that you will not be spending as much time in class, but you will be required to do extensive reading and research, so manage your time wisely! There may also be more informal group session meetings during the week for some classes. Your grade will most likely be determined by two or three large assignments instead of many smaller assignments. Because of this, it is very important that you don't put off anything to the last minute.

Highlights: There are three types of housing available at the University of Leicester. The first option is to live in a residence hall with a meal plan. The meal plan covers all meals with the exception of weekday lunches. The second option is a self-catered residence hall. In this living arrangement, you will have a single room, usually grouped with 9 other rooms. This unit of 10 rooms shares bathroom, kitchen, and utility room. Many of these accommodations are in donated Victorian/Edwardian houses. The final housing option is to find your own accommodation in the city. This is not recommended however, because there may be some distance to travel to the campus from your apartment or flat.
