The Office of Study Abroad and the Department of Germanic Languages and Literature, in cooperation with Rutgers University, will offer a six-week, two-course summer program in Berlin. Directed by Germanic Studies Professor William Donahue, Duke Summer in Berlin will offer a range of elective courses in a stimulating and historical urban environment. The program is interdisciplinary in nature, attractive to students with a substantial interest in German politics and culture. The principal attraction is Berlin itself, the capital of Germany and the economic capital of Europe. The program will appeal to many students outside the German program, including those from Business, Mathematics, Philosophy, History, Jewish Students, and Political Science.
Highlights:
Courses will be offered in Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced German (details TBA). In addition, upper-level content courses will fulfill German Studies requirements within the Department. These courses will be taught in English. German majors are encouraged to enroll in two German language courses. Students who are not in German studies may enroll in two English-language courses which will give a unique, yet thorough, insight into German culture and society at the beginning of the 21st Century. Sample courses may include: Jewish Berlin, Germany Confronts the Holocaust, Berlin Stories, Art History: an Introduction to the Treasures of Berlin.

The program is open to students in good academic standing in all majors. You need not have taken German courses to participate; however language students will be placed in courses prior to departure.
