Germany
Term: Academic Year
Dates: Early Sept-Late July with a 2 month break from mid-Feb-mid-Apr
Description:
Pre-session: The focus of the orientation course is intensive language acquisition and includes a broad cultural introduction to the region as well. Students will receive 3 credits for the pre-session. Required: Students enroll in a combination of specially-designed program courses and regular university courses. A course catalog for regular courses is available in Freiburg bookstores a few weeks before the semester begins. The program offers intensive language courses that help students to improve their German language skills rapidly. A program course on German history will be taught each fall, and a course on the European Union will be offered each spring. Optional: Students take a combination of program and regular university courses depending upon their proficiency. Advanced students may choose to take mostly regular university courses and less advanced students may choose to take mostly program courses. Types of Courses Available: German language courses, program courses (described above), and regular university courses in a wide variety of subjects. UW students have taken courses in 26 different departments, including science departments such as Biology and Biochemistry, although some of these may not be available at the 'introductory' level. Students need to be pro-active in pursuing regular university courses in which they are interested.
