Uganda and Rwanda: Peace and Conflict Studies in the Lake Victoria Basin

  Rwanda
    Rural Areas
  Uganda
    Kampala

Term: Summer
Dates: Six weeks (mid-June to late July)

Description: The School for International Training's Study Abroad programs offer field-based study in over 57 countries. Each summer program, offering 6, 8 or 9 academic credits, focuses on a specific academic theme. This academic experience is designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are led by one or two academic directors.

This ground-breaking program utilizes the resources of Makerere University and engage with the active peace-building and NGO community around the city to explore the impact of conflict in the region. Though Uganda has had relative political stability since 1986, civil strife in the northern part of the country continues to cause civil dislocation, destruction of life and property, and a drain onlocal and global resources. In addition to study in Uganda, students will examine the Rwandan genocide, a tragedy that resulted in the killing of nearly one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus over a 100-day period.

Students will explore historical and current perspectives, as well as the larger framework of peace and conflict studies in the region.
