South Africa: Education and Social Change

Dates: 6 weeks (early June to mid July)

Description: The School for International Training's Study Abroad programs offer field-based study in over 57 countries. Each summer program, offering 6, 8 or 9 academic credits, focuses on a specific academic theme. This academic experience is designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are led by one or two academic directors.

Observe the role of education in creating social change in the new South Africa and participate in rural and urban practicum experiences.

It is widely recognized in South African society, by both government and civil society, and transcending race and class, that education has a vital role in the development of the country. Vast challenges remain in curricular reform, pedagogy, and educational delivery, however, before education will be able to play its vital and progressive role in social transformation.

In this program, students will explore the history of education in South Africa, examine the challenges and successes of educational transformation since the 1994 elections, and analyze potential paths for the future of education in South Africa.

Educational Excursions:

The program will offer a variety of field experiences, and may include the Apartheid and Hector Pieterson Museums in Johannesburg and Soweto; primary, secondary, and tertiary as well as adult educational and training centers in urban and rural KwaZulu Natal; and the office and project sites of governmental and non-governmental educational organizations.
