The Political Economy of Imperialism
England
Term: Summer
Dates: July 31-August 28, 2010
Description:
From 1816 until the late twentieth century the sun never set on the British Empire. During much of this period Great Britain was the most powerful nation in the world. How did this small island manage to gain an empire of this size? How did it manage to maintain it for such a long period in the face of colonial discontent and the ambitions of other powerful states? What were the advantages and costs of the empire? What brought about its demise? There is no better place to examine these questions than London, which was the heart of the empire. Field trips will include the Imperial War Museum, the British Museum, the National Maritime Museum, all in London, and the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol.
