Description: Join Jacksonville University faculty this summer exploring the past, present and future of the Philippines. Take a look back at Spanish colonial rule and the influence of Spain and the US on these great tropical islands. Join in local fiestas see firsthand the colonial influence on this country. Learn about ancient Malay and Chinese influences and experience this unique, multi-ethnic society for yourself.

This service-learning program allows students to earn JU credit while volunteering their time with various projects including orphanage assistance, working with street children, the environment and community development. Dance students can also participate on the program and take classes with the local Leyte Dance Company.

Summer in the Philippines

Service projects may include teaching classes, medical missions,      
building homes, working in orphanages, construction projects, theater,
music and dance classes.

Earn 3 credits from Jacksonville University in International Studies. Spend 2 weeks studying Spanish colonialism and the effects of the Spanish existence in the Philippines, while participating in this service-learning program.

The Spanish colonial influence is evident in every aspect of daily life in the Philippines from the language to the food, dance and music. Further colonial influence from the United States as well as ancient Chinese and Malay trading influx have left one of the most multi-cultural and multi-ethnic societies in Asia. The Philippines are the only Christian state in South East Asia. English and Tagalog are the national languages.
