API at the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao
Spain
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: please inquire for program dates
Description:
This program is designed for art majors/minors. Students are required to have taken two semesters of college level Spanish. Some courses of study may require a higher working knowledge of Spanish. Students will attend classes at the Facultad de Bellas Artes (Department of Fine Arts) at La Universidad del PaĆs Vasco, Campus de Leioa (the University of the Basque Country, Leioa Campus). This is a studio arts program, and classes will be taught in Spanish (Castilian), some courses are taught in Basque and students are discouraged from taking those classes. API strongly encourages students to take classes with professors who speak some English. However, due to the hands-on nature of the studio courses, there is minimal time spent in a lecture setting. This program offers a dynamic opportunity to practice and participate in studio arts classes with students from across Europe and the world. Most courses are worth 3-6 semester credits each (the amount of credit depends on the course). Students in this program are enrolled in classes with Spanish students. The fall semester of the University of the Basque Country's academic calendar finishes at the end of January. Students may petition to take their exams early, but it is not recommended, nor can it be guaranteed that professors will allow the scheduling change. As such, students are encouraged to enroll for the entire academic year or for the spring semester. Students will also have the option to add on a special three-week Restoration session at the end of the spring term. This opportunity is limited to qualified students. Projects vary from restoration of furniture, to works of art, to buildings and frescoes. If you are interested in this option, please contact the API office for more information.
Highlights:
Continuing its climb as a region of great educational opportunities, the city's University of Bilbao became the University of the Basque Country in 1980, combining university programs from across the Basque region. As an API student, you will study at the Facultad de Bellas Artes (Faculty of Fine Arts) of the university. While studying in the heart of one of Europe's fastest growing art scenes, API students will have the opportunity to learn and create alongside art students from across Europe. Not only will you challenge your own abilities, but you will also be able to find inspiration as you visit and experience the many spectacular works of art by some of the greatest artists in history and the cutting-edge artists of today.
