Term: Summer
Dates: May 18- June 21
Description:
Arctic Journey introduces students to the Arctic Region, the Territory of Nunavut, and the Inuit of Nunavut, Canada. Participants will learn from Inuit about their land, culture, philosophy, recent political history, contemporary governance and the role that the Arctic environment played in shaping all of these. This program is the first of its kind to combine community service with the opportunity to learn directly from those who helped re-draw the map of Canada, entrench Inuit culture, language and values into contemporary public government, and who inspired Indigenous movements globally. Students will experience life in Canada's newest Territory first hand by living in the capital city of Nunavut, Iqaluit. Through attending daily seminars they will meet in person many of the people who founded the first national and international Inuit organizations, helped to create an Inuit movement, and who negotiated the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. This program provides the rare opportunity to have discussions on the contemporary history of the Inuit with the history-makers themselves, discussions that could only take place in Nunavut. Through service to the community, students will earn the opportunity to travel "out on the land" or "out on the ice", take a day trip to a smaller community in the North, or spend time with Elders and other community members. Students will receive an orientation and briefing on Inuit history in Ottawa, where they will visit key Inuit organizations, Federal offices and Nunavut Sivuniksavut, a leadership training school for young Inuit from Nunavut. They will also be given an introduction to Inuit culture and customs.
