Description:
The goals of the program are for students to begin learning or further develop spoken and written Spanish language skills while studying the socioeconomic and cultural impact of tourism in the Balearic Islands, or the history and culture of Mallorca on the Mediterranean. These goals are accomplished through daily interaction in Palma's academic and social milieu, living with Spanish-speaking families, class-related excursions in the Balearic Islands, and participation in a UIB tourism-related research project. Established in 2006, the CIEE Study Center at Universitat de les Illes Balears provides an academic summer program for students interested in tourism studies and/or Spanish Mediterranean culture who want to develop or improve their Spanish language skills, while learning about Spain and Europe through living in Palma. Academic Culture
Classes are held at the modern UIB campus and class sizes are small. Although extracurricular activities and personal travel contribute to the student's overall study abroad experience, attendance in class is paramount. Any extended travel should take place prior to the start of the program or upon completion of the program.
Highlights:
- Improve your Spanish while studying and living in the beautiful Mediterranean city of Palma de Mallorca
- Participate in field visits to sites of socio-economic and cultural importance related to tourism in the Balearic Islands and the history of the Mediterranean
- Take part in a diverse excursion and activities program with trips to various historical and natural parts of Mallorca, such as the island of Cabrera's National Park and the breathtaking views of the Cape of Formentor
Culture
Cultural Activities and Field Trips
The academic program is supplemented with educational field trips and excursions. They include visits to museums, theaters, traditional festivals and fairs in Mallorca, and excursions to nearby sites of historical and natural interest. Visits supplement class work and introduce students to the rich diversity of the geographical, linguistic, and culture of the Balearic Islands. Each content course also includes trips related to topics covered in class. Sites may include those of mass tourism and overdevelopment in Mallorca, rural eco-tourism sites in Mallorca and Menorca, environmental and governmental agencies, natural parks, villages, and pre-historical sites.Guardian Angels
CIEE Guardian Angels are local University students who accompany CIEE students on group activities and field trips and other events. Guardian Angels are a first contact at the University, introducing CIEE students to the University and Palma's culture.

Cost Include Description:
The CIEE fee for 2009 includes an optional on-site airport meet and greet, full-time leadership and support, tuition, housing and most meals, orientation, cultural activities, local excursions, pre-departure advising, and a CIEE iNext travel card which provides insurance and other travel benefits.
