What better way to experience Australia than to learn about the history and culture of the traditional people of the country. The Nyungar people are an Aboriginal people who live in the southwest corner of Australia - what is today the region south of Perth. Throughout this five week program you will learn from the Nyungar leaders about their homeland, rituals, art, music and language. You will have the opportunity to go on field trips to places of cultural significance, such as Walyuap (Fremantle), Wadjemup (Rottnest Island) and Wardandi (Yallingup) during one of the most important of the Nyungar's six seasons - Makuru (winter), when the rains signal the cleansing of the land, river and ocean. Along the way you'll engage in comparisons of colonial and indigenous discourse, perspectives and reflection.
Highlights:
The aim of this program is to introduce students to a range of knowledge about Nyungar and their place within past and contemporary Australia, the relationships between social and cultural theory and practice and how the Nyungar people have influenced and continued to influence Australian culture. The learning objectives are as follows: - Research and write and essay and present a group workshop on Nyungar culture - Understand the difference between stereotype and knowledge - Comprehend Nyungar world views - Develop ruditamentary writing, reading and speaking skills in Nyungar language, and thereby understand the importance of narrative in Nyungar society
