Aoyama Gakuin University is located in Central Tokyo near the trendy bustling center of Tokyo entertainment and nightlife known as Shibuya. The university was established in 1949 and has a current enrollment of approximately 20,000 students. Students at Aoyama will study Japanese Language, "Japanology" (Japanese culture and history), or courses in Japanese or English, with Japanese students, in a variety of departments (Literature, International Politics, Economics, and Business). Examples of some courses offered are: Japanese I, II, and III - Focus on Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing Japanology A: Japan and Popular Culture (Lecture in English - offered Spring Semester only) Japanology B: Introduction to Japanese Cinema (Lecture in English - offered Fall Semester only) Calligraphy Communication: Cross-cultural/Intercultural Communication (Lecture in English) History of Japanese Arts Linguistics: Introduction to Cognitive Linguistics (Lecture in English; year-long course starting in Spring) Economic Policy (Lecture in English) International Management (Lecture in English) Japanese Politics I (Lecture in English - offered Spring Semester only) Students typically live in dormitories organized by the university. The men's dormitory (Josei-ryo) is located at a 10-minute walk from campus. The dormitory offers 13 meals per week included in the dormitory fee. There are also two other options: co-ed dormitories (Kyoritsu: 30-60 minute commute depending on location) - offer single rooms with shared bathrooms, laundry room, and kitchen (meals also available); a women's dormitory called "Five Ships" - offers single rooms in a house shared with 4-5 students (a one-hour commute).
Highlights:
International Exchange Center (IEC) is responsible for exchange agreements with overseas universities and research institutions. The faculty and staff of Aoyama Gakuin University are committed to helping international students adjust to their new environment so that they are able to pursue their studies effectively. Advisers: International students enrolled at AGU are assigned faculty members as advisers, and are encouraged to consult the advisers assigned to them if they have questions regarding their studies or any other aspect of life in Japan. Tutors: International students are also assigned Japanese students as tutors. These tutors assist them in dealing with both academic and personal matters, such as coping with any language or intercultural problems that may arise. Aoyama Gakuin University offers two kinds of extracurricular activities intended to enrich student life. Many international students choose to join clubs. The experience of participating in club activities enriches student life at AGU. The two types of clubs are listed below: * More than 34 athletic clubs including aikido, tennis, basketball, and sailing. * More than 40 hobby clubs including shodo, kado, and other Japanese culture clubs.
