  • Christchurch

Term: Fall, Spring, Throughout the year
Dates: See website.

Description: New Zealand's second oldest university, the University of Canterbury is located in Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island. The university's modern, well-equipped facilities are spread across a spacious (76-hectare) suburban campus at Ilam, 4 miles from the city center. Playing fields, woodlands and the renowned Ilam Gardens surround the campus' central complex of libraries, lecture theatres, and laboratories. There is easy access to the city center and its cultural and recreational attractions. Christchurch has great beaches and recreational areas, and the mountains (including 5 ski-fields) are one-hour away.

Highlights: The Study Australia program includes a 5-day group orientation (for most of our sites), guaranteed, fully furnished, and prearranged housing for your entire stay abroad, and much more.

Established in 1873 by scholars from Oxford and Cambridge, the University of Canterbury has an international reputation for academic excellence in both teaching and research. All teaching staff are expected to be active in research and publishing. As a result, students can expect lecturers who are on the forefront of their academic discipline. The University has faculties of Arts (Humanities and Social Sciences), Engineering, Science, Commerce, Music and Fine Arts, Forestry, and Law. Academic offerings unique to Canterbury include Antarctic Studies (Christchurch is the supply base for both the US and New Zealand Antarctic Programs), Maori Studies, and New Zealand and Pacific literature, history and politics. The University has five field stations throughout the South Island, including a marine biology research center and an observatory in the high country. Courses in the field sciences, forestry or astronomy often include field trips to the various stations.
