Bolivia: Multiculturalism, Globalization, and Social Change
Bolivia
Term: Fall, Spring
Dates: please inquire for specific dates
Description:
Stretching from the tropical Amazon to the soaring Andes, Bolivia's diverse landscapes and populations offer amazing contrasts--as well as significant challenges to development. While the increasingly influential Quechua and Aymara peoples make up the majority of Bolivia's population, an urban-based Mestizo minority remains the dominant power in Bolivian society, resulting in economic policies that often exclude many Bolivians. Cultural processes, identities, and resources play a key role in defining who controls development and how it is implemented. Field excursions to the tropical lowlands and the altiplano, including spectacular Lake Titicaca and the world's highest capital city, La Paz, give you opportunities to observe social and cultural life in both urban and rural Bolivia. Visits to development agencies and seminars on the history of Bolivian social movements increase your understanding of this predominantly indigenous nation.
