ISEP-Direct at University of Ghana
Ghana
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Description:
The university was founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast and operated as an affiliate college of the University of London, which supervised its academic programs and awarded degrees. The institution was awarded full university status in 1961. The University of Ghana is the largest of the four universities in Ghana and currently enrolls nearly 7,000 students. Originally, the curricular emphasis was on liberal arts, social science, basic science, agriculture and medicine; however, there is currently a national educational reform program to diversify the curriculum and provide more science and technology and post-graduate training. Locale: The campus is located approximately 13 kilometers northeast of Accra, the capital of Ghana. University Avenue extends from the main gate to Legon Hill, where Commonwealth Hall, convocation buildings, an open-air theatre, the Great Hall and a tower donated by the Government of Ghana to commemorate Ghana s independence may be found. Academic notes: Most appropriate fields are African studies, geography and resource development, agriculture, and social sciences. One of the university's objectives is to ensure that its students have an understanding of world affairs, in particular of the histories, institutions and cultures of African civilizations. To meet this objective, a program in African studies is offered as an integral part of all bachelor's programs. Advanced degrees are open to ISEP participants, but students must apply directly to the degree program. The Faculty of Law is only open to graduate students. Students should note that odd-numbered courses are offered in the fall semester and even-numbered courses are offered in the spring semester. Students whose field of study is in the sciences should note that due to limited resources, lab-based courses are unavailable. Curriculum for science courses is largely theory based.
Highlights:
ISEP students participate in an extensive orientation program, including cultural and academic information, and visits to local areas of interest. Benefits include an on-site Resident Director to assist ISEP students. ISEP students are offered a Twi language course two hours/week during the first semester in Ghana. All participants are expected to enroll in this course. Students will be housed in the university residence halls and a meal stipend will be provided.

International Student Exchange Program (ISEP)'s Mission Statement: ISEP is the world's largest network of post-secondary institutions cooperating to provide international educational experiences. ISEP offers a diverse range of sites and programs that combine opportunities for intellectual and personal growth with immersion in another culture. Through reciprocal exchange and other innovative and cost-effective study abroad approaches, students have access to affordable, high quality study abroad programs as an integral part of their education.
ISEP enables students to spend a semester, academic year or summer abroad, earn academic credit towards their degree and participate in the academic and social life of their host institution. ISEP alumni cite the experience of independence, full immersion in another culture, and the friendships with host country and other international students as the most valuable aspects of the program. About half of ISEP institutions abroad offer courses in English. In countries where the language of instruction is not English, students may take intensive language courses, or, if they know the host language well enough, follow regular classes with native students.
