interstudy: Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
South Africa
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: Middle January - Late June, Early July - Late November
Description:
With the adoption by Parliament of the 1964 Act, the bilingual English/Afrikaans Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University came into being, located in the central part of the city, with 320 students and 33 academic staff members. The young university grew steadily and has currently a registration of over 5,600 students in six faculties. In 1970, the university moved to its new and modern campus by the sea, four miles from the city center on the 830 hectares in the suburb of Summerstrand. The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University campus, the largest in the southern hemisphere, virtually surrounded by the sea and coastal dunes, is a proclaimed nature reserve. It is four miles from the city center of Port Elizabeth, the fifth largest city in South Africa with a population of over one million people. Port Elizabeth is truly blessed: miles of golden beaches, temperate climate, extensive sports facilities and its reputation as the "Friendly City", and the continent's famed 'surfer's paradise'.
Highlights:
There are several aspects of the interstudy Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University program that set it apart from other study abroad experiences.
