Central College Abroad--Summer London Shakespeare
England
- Surrounding London:
Stratford
Term: Summer
Description:
The focus for this special Shakespeare course offered in London and Stratford is the consideration of Shakespeare's plays as they move from text to performance. Students will study six plays in depth, largely determined by offerings at The New Globe, The National Theatre and other theatres in the West End of London, as well as the Royal Shakespeare Company offering in Stratford.
Highlights:
Classes and workshops will be held in our central London residence, Vandon House, and at the New Globe Theatre on the South Bank. Students will learn about the development of the theatre in early modern England and, by seeing a variety of productions on the London stage, discover how modern directors reinterpret Shakespeare for our culture. Excursions include visits to the various sites and theatres where Shakespeare's plays were first performed (i.e. Gray's Inn, Middle Temple, and The Banqueting Hall) and will have the opportunity to discover the original playing conditions of Shakespeare's Globe through workshops, tours, and lectures at The New Globe. Students will also spend time in Stratford where they will take in several productions and tour the Festival Theatre, various Shakespeare properties, and the Shakespeare Centre. There will also be a tour of Warwick Castle, the ancestral residence of 'Warwick, the Kingmaker,' of Shakespeare's history plays.
