Description:
Spend 4 weeks immersed in the Indian Film Industry also known as "Bollywood." The Film and Media internship progam is run in partnership with the "Center for South Asia Studies" U.C. Berkeley, California, USA. This practicum intends to introduce students to the film world in Mumbai, India. The program blends academic lectures, practical work experience and cultural immersion to give program participants a unique view of Indian culture through the medium of film and media. The course emphasizes the inner workings and logics of film and media workers in Mumbai and incorporates visits and lectures to media workers such as writers, producers, media company executives, actors, film directors, art designers, fashion choreographers...The program integrates lectures, readings, film screenings, field trips and internships on live film projects. To gain practical experience, program participants are placed in an observational capacity with film professionals and gain first hand experience on the art of filmmaking. Mentoring professionals are chosen for their expertise, willingness and enthusiasm for teaching.
Highlights:
- Informational lectures and meetings: Students will attend lectures and one-on-one meetings with film and media professionals. They will be able to interact with industry professionals in their own environment, and spend time with them on the job. This will give students an understanding of the processes and people involved in the making of a film, including production, direction, post production, finance, and distribution. - Field trips: Students will spend a few days on a film set to get a behind-the-scenes view into the worlds of set designers, prop houses, casting directors, production executives, action directors, stunt masters, make-up artistes, fashion designers, lighting men, spot boys, music directors and other cast and crew. - Project: All students will be encouraged to work on and submit a project. This project will be designed in consultation with the Academic Director keeping in mind the students' individual interests. The project will take two weeks to complete and will ensure that participant is not merely a passive observer but an active participant. This project will deepen the students' learning and help them reflect on their 4 week experience. Students will be assigned tasks based on their capabilities, competencies and areas of interest. The program requires all participants to perform the duties assigned to them to the fullest and submit a detailed project report on completion of the program.
Qualifications:
This program is open to all levels of students and individuals with an interest in films and media. Participants must be over 20 years of age, easy going, flexible, independent and willing to take the initiative to learn. Filmmaking is a creative but arduous task and participants must be willing to work hard and adapt to different surroundings and work environments. Individual or groups of students can apply to the program.

Cost Include Description:
Pre-departure and on-site orientation materials and guidance, International health and evacuation insurance, Airport pick up on arrival, All lectures, field trips and preceptor costs. Comprehensive orientation and full time coordinators: You will be met on arrival at Mumbai International Airport by our coordinators from where you will be transported to your guesthouse. We will arrange all accommodations, meals and provide orientation on issues around diet, safety, transport, currency conversion, communication, travel, norms and culture. Our coordinators will hold weekly meetings to monitor and evaluate the program and will provide 24 hour emergency support. Accommodation (Shared basis): Accommodation will be provided at a local guesthouse on a shared basis (2-3 students per room). The food provided in the program is traditional Indian vegetarian cuisine. Communication: You will be assigned a mobile phone (with free unlimited incoming calls) for the duration of your stay.
