Term: Summer, Winter
Dates: May - June
Description:
Short (4 weeks/6 semester credits) experiential educational program (May/June or January) to study New Zealand's unique culture, society, and natural resources (rainforests, coasts, ocean, and mountains) through field activities and classes. Imagine visiting snow-capped mountains rising 12,000 feet out of the sea; cruising the largest fiords in the world; hiking massive glaciers carving their way to the ocean; experiencing close encounters with flora and fauna unknown elsewhere in the world; kayaking to deserted beaches through turquoise waters; and discovering the stunning scenery of the Lord of the Rings. We spend 12 days in the garden city of Christchurch with courses from faculty at Lincoln University, University of Canterbury, and Christchurch Polytechnic. Classes are followed by a 2-week field study tour of the South Island. A typical itinerary includes hiking in Mount Cook National Park; visits to the wild West Coast and the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki; a guided kayak of Abel Tasman National Park; a guided glacial hike on Fox Glacier; a farm visit; swimming with dolphins at Kaikoura; a visit to a Maori marae; and a cruise on Milford Sound. This program can be combined with the 8-day program in the Fiji Islands for an additional 3 credits.
Highlights:
* Earn 6 semester credits in a variety of course options. * Students from all majors are encouraged to apply, as we take an interdisciplinary perspective to explore the connections between people and their natural environments. * Study under knowledgeable university faculty and professional field guides. * Explore New Zealand through exciting outdoor activities such as kayaking and hiking. * Activities and excursions relate what you have learnt in the classroom to the field. * AUIP will work directly with students and advisers in ensuring credits are transferred to your home institution. * Teaching assistants will provide tutorial assistance.
